Low Life Glossary
noun. A dandyish form of clothing characterized by excessively long and broad sleeves, baggy pants, and broad-brimmed hats affected by Mexican American youth during the early 1940s. Zoot suits were deemed wasteful and unpatriotic by white and African Americans who supported the war effort. Anger with the display of conspicuous consumption during a time of rationing was one of the factors (along with racism and a vague sense of vigilantism) contributing to the eruption of the 1943 Zoot Suit riots in Los Angeles.

A zoot suit (occasionally spelled zuit suit) is a men's suit with high-waisted, wide-legged, tight-cuffed, ged trousers, and a long coat with wide lapels and wide padded shoulders. This style of clothing became popular among the African-American, Chicano, Filipino American, and Italian American communities during the 1940s. In Britain the "Edwardian-look" suits with velvet lapels worn by Teddy Boys is said to be a one of the derivatives of the zoot suit.
