The process of routing and transferring data by means of addressed packets so that a channel is occupied during the transmission of the packet only, and upon completion of the transmission the channel is made available for the transfer of other traffic. (188 )
A data transmission technique wherein user information is segmented and routed in discrete data units called packets, each with its own appended control information for routing, sequencing, and error checking. Packet switching allows a communications channel to be shared by many users, each using the circuit only for the time required to transmit a single packet.

Method to send data across a network . Data is broken up into packets (chunks). Each packet has the address of the sender and the address of the destination. This way, packets from many different sources can be sent on the same line at the same time.
The method used to move data around on the Internet. In packet switching, all the data coming out of a machine is broken up into chunks, each chunk has the address of where it came from and where it is going. This enables chunks of data from many different sources to co-mingle on the same lines, and be sorted and directed to different routes by special machines along the way. This way many people can use the same lines at the same time.
A communications paradigm in which packets (messages) are individually routed between hosts, with no previously established communication path. See also: circuit switching, connection- oriented, connectionless.
