Description: A compound made up of these three components: a sugar, phosphate and a nitrogen-containing base. Found as individual molecules (e.g., ATP, the «energy molecule»), or as many nucleotides linked together in a chain (nucleic acid such as DNA).

Glossary of Genetic Terms
defined: One of the structural components, or building blocks, of DNA and RNA. A nucleotide consists of a base (one of four chemicals: adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine) plus a molecule of sugar and one of phosphoric acid.

Common Terms in Evolutionary Biology and Genetics
The monomeric unit that makes up the DNA or RNA, formed by a phosphate group, a pentose and one of the nitrogenous bases (A, T/U, C, G). Nucleotides in RNA are adenylate, guanylate, cytidylate and uridylate; in DNA, they are (d)adenylate, (d)guanylate, (d)cytidylate and thymidylate.
General Chemistry Glossary
Compare with nucleoside .A molecule which is a basic building block of nucleic acids and which plays a key role in energy transfer in biochemical reactions. Nucleotides consist of a five-carbon sugar, a heterocyclic nitrogen-containing organic base, and a phosphate group.

English Wikipedia - The Free Encyclopedia
Nucleotides are organic molecules that serve as the monomers, or subunits, of nucleic acids like DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid). The building blocks of nucleic acids, nucleotides are composed of a nitrogenous base, a five-carbon sugar (ribose or deoxyribose), and at least one phosphate group. Thus a nucleoside plus a phosphate group yields a nucleotide.

Terms and Definitions
A subunit of DNA or RNA, consisting of one chemical base plus a phosphate molecule and a sugar molecule.
Dictionary of Medicine (Shahram)
A subunit of DNA or RNA. A nucleotide consists of a nitrogenous base (A, G, T, or C in DNA; A, G, U, or C in RNA), a phosphate molecule, and a sugar molecule (deoxyribose in DNA and ribose in RNA). Thousands of nucleotides are linked to form a DNA or RNA molecule.
Hepatitis Central (TM) Liver Disease Medical Glossary
One of the compounds into which nucleic acid splits on hydrolysis, consisting of a nitrogenous base, a sugar, and a phosphate group. Joined to a purine or pyrimidine base and to a phosphate group and that are the basic structural units of RNA and DNA
Aids Glossary
one of the building blocks that make up the genetic material (DNA and RNA). Nucleotides consist of a base (adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine or uracil), a sugar and a phosphate group.
Glossary of HIV/AIDS-Related Terms
Nucleotides are the building blocks of nucleic acids<!-- (see) -->, DNA<!-- (see) -->, and RNA<!-- (see) -->. Nucleotides are composed of phosphate groups, a five-sided sugar molecule (ribose sugars in RNA, deoxyribose sugars in DNA), and nitrogen containing bases. These fall into two classes: pyrimidines and purines. A nucleotide without its phosphate group is called a nucleoside.
