A Multitasking operating system is one that allows a PC to perform more than one task at a time. There are several types of multitasking. Different types include:-
Context switching - Only the foreground applications utilises the processor
Cooperative multitasking - Background tasks utilise the processor during idle times
Time-slice multitasking - Each task utilises the processor's for a fraction of a second.
Jensen's Technology Glossary
Execution of programs simultaneously on a single computer. In newer operating systems, two or more programs may be running "in the background" while the user is concentrating on another program running "in the foreground." Limits on how many programs can be run at the same time depend more upon hardware capacities, especially RAM amounts. Most operating systems now have multitasking capabilities. Multitasking differs from multiloading in which RAM contains multiple programs that can only be run one at a time. (See also Operating system)
Multitasking Definition from Encyclopedia Dictionaries & Glossaries
English Wikipedia - The Free Encyclopedia
In computing, multitasking is a concept of performing multiple tasks (also known as processes) over a certain period of time by executing them concurrently. New tasks start and interrupt already started ones before they have reached completion, instead of executing the tasks sequentially so each started task needs to reach its end before a new one is started. As a result, a computer executes segments of multiple tasks in an interleaved manner, while the tasks share common processing resources such as central processing units (CPUs) and main memory.
